Canada has recently implemented significant changes to its policies for international students, affecting both work limits during studies and eligibility for post-graduation work permits.
Increased Off-Campus Work Hours
As of November 8, 2024, eligible international students are permitted to work up to 24 hours per week off-campus during regular academic sessions, an increase from the previous 20-hour limit. This adjustment aims to provide students with greater financial flexibility while ensuring they remain focused on their studies.
Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) Eligibility Adjustments
Starting November 1, 2024, the eligibility criteria for the PGWP have been refined:
Field of Study Requirements: International students must enroll in programs aligned with sectors experiencing long-term labor shortages to qualify for the PGWP. This change is intended to better match graduates with Canada’s labor market needs.
Language Proficiency Standards: Applicants for the PGWP are now required to demonstrate a minimum proficiency in English or French, ensuring they can effectively integrate into the Canadian workforce.
Reduction in Study Permit Issuances
In response to concerns over housing shortages and the strain on public services, Canada plans to reduce the number of international study permits issued. The target is to decrease the number to 437,000 in 2025, down from 509,390 in 2023.
These policy changes reflect Canada’s efforts to balance the benefits of international education with sustainable growth and resource management.
